Tropical living outdoors
What’s a sala? Somewhere you definitely want to spend lazy days.
A sala is a Thai word for an outdoor room, small building or platform – covered with a roof to provide shade. Our sala sits poolside and is big enough for a family meal, enjoying sunset cocktails or a memorable Monopoly game.

Why you’ll love spending time in the sala:
You get extensive ocean views along Koh Samui’s coastline all the way to Koh Phangan
Read books in it, take long naps, or start writing your life story
Or, just look across to the small island of Koh Som, contemplating world peace
We think this might be our favourite spot in the whole house. Or is it the kitchen? Can’t decide...
Outdoor living room
Enjoy tons of tropical outdoor space: sunshine when you want it, and lots of shade for naps (and sissies). A few steps down from the pool’s deep end you’ll find yet another space to hang out – an area we’ve given the very original name “outdoor living room”.
Shade when you want it
This space is in glorious shade until the very late afternoon. Two bedrooms (the second master suite and bedroom five), adjoin this outdoor space so it’s a great communal spot for a smaller group or the whole team.
A pair of outdoor couches and an immense antique Balinese daybed can fit all ten guests at once or – if you’re like us – three adults playing 'Exploding Kittens' with near-rabid intensity.
As on the upper terrace, outdoor speakers will gladly play from any Bluetooth device (if that sounds confusing, it isn’t – we road-tested our instructions sheet on a 70-year-old technophobe). Soundtrack suggestion: If you, as well, plan to play 'Exploding Kittens' … you’ll find that 'Eye of the Tiger' is a suitable soundtrack. These downstairs speakers are on a separate system to those upstairs – so no parent has to suffer their teenagers’ “music” (or vice versa).
